Streator Mayor announces time change for upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting

The time for this month’s Streator Committee of the Whole Meeting has changed. Mayor Tara Bedei says the meeting will start at 6 pm instead of its normal time of 1:30 on Tuesday, June 14th.

Bedei says she hopes the change in time will allow for better transparency as the city decides what to do about its ambulance service. She says it’s the largest decision that she’s been a part of in the last eight years as a city council member.

She says so far city staff has met with other area communities to see how they run ambulance service, researched how much it would cost to bring in it house, and looking at medical billing services.

AMT, which provides service to the city, announced they will leave at the end of October if the city doesn’t resign a contract. The company says it’s costing too much to continue to run and wants $700,000 a year from the city.

At their last full city council meeting, the council voted no to purchasing two ambulances for $400,000. City Manager David Plyman said that it isn’t a permanent rejection and he will keep researching options.

The next full city council meeting has also been changed from Wednesday, June 15th to Wednesday June, 22nd.
