Ottawa Police Detective Sgt. Kyle Booras says the department recovered a loaded AR-15 style “ghost gun” when they tried to stop a vehicle last Wednesday. The suspect lead police on a brief pursuit when the person allegedly threw the weapon and another loaded hand gun out the window. Booras says the incident remains under investigation.

He says ghost guns are privately made and don’t have a serial number to identify who it belongs to. He says when firearms are seized, it’s a result of mental health related incidents and abandoned firearms which have been recovered. 57 firearms were seized by the department last year.

Booras also encourages residents who are interested to research Illinois HB 4348 which makes it generally unlawful for a person or people to possess or sell “ghost guns.” The law was signed by Gov. Pritzker last Wednesday.
