A Mendota man is accused of trying to steal a vehicle in Peru Sunday. Peru Police Chief Robert Pyszka says the police department was called to the 2000 block of 4th St because of reports of suspicious activity. Resident reported a suspicious vehicle parked outside of a house with no registration and a loud bang in the area as well.

After an investigation, police arrested 26-year old Ryan Johnson. Pyszka says Johnson allegedly brandished a Glock model handgun at the owner to try and steal the vehicle. He also says police determined that the gun was reported stolen out of Peoria. The LaSalle County States Attorney’s office has only charged Johnson with illegal Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Pyszka says more charged could be coming later.

Clarification: An earlier version of this story erroneously implied that there was doubt about whether the handgun had been reported stolen.
