As schools try to emerge from the pandemic, they’re working to overcome a teacher shortage. In some cases, teachers are leaving the profession because of changes in schooling. Illinois State Supt. of Education Carmen Ayala says those teachers are making the kind of career and retirement decisions everyone makes.

Ayala says with every educational reform, some teachers work through and adjust while others decide teaching’s not for them anymore. She was in Ottawa last week for the Excellence in Education event to honor local teachers and other school employees.
