Justice Tom Lytton is retiring from the Third District Appellate Court. LaSalle County Judge Joe Hettel will take his place. Appointed to the fill the vacancy, Hettel can run in an election to the appellate court in 2024. He told WCMY News today, he intends to. That’s what he did to remain a circuit court judge after his appointment in 2006. Hettel was the LaSalle County state’s attorney from 2000 to 2006.
Hettel says the diversity of cases in the local circuit keeps him sharp. His experience as a private practice attorney, a prosecutor, and a civil court judge add to his confidence in taking the appellate court appointment.

Hettel says Carter has been a mentor to him for a long time and it’s humbling to get such recognition. He says his current job is the one he always wanted, but the opportunity for the appellate court seat arose and he thought it over quickly.
Lytton says he’s thoroughly enjoyed his 30 years as an appellate court judge. He says every aspect of the position has been rewarding from handing down decisions to interacting with court staff. He says it has been an honor to serve the people.
