Local governments ask for state to rethink police reform law

Some local governments are asking the Illinois General Assembly to repeal or rewrite the SAFE-T Act. Its aim is to gradually reform police departments across the state.

Its critics say it tilts things too much in favor of criminals. In the middle are people who say the act should be rewritten to get rid of some of the things it does, like eliminating bond for many crimes and letting people file complaints anonymously against police officers. But they want to keep things like body cameras for police officers and firing the ones who commit sexual assaults.

The Marseilles City Council passed a resolution last night asking for a revisit and the LaSalle County Board did last week.
