Republican St Sen. Sue Rezin of Morris and Republican St Sen. Brian Stewart of Freeport say the 2023 state budget is an election year gimmick. Rezin says Democrats rushed a budget through the General Assembly in the dead of night which will increase the state’s permanent spending and offer residents temporary tax relief that ends shortly after the next election.

She voted for the tax relief portion of the plan but voted against the state spending plan. Stewart says Republican legislative leaders have offer plans that would have provided more permanent tax relief for months.

The $45 billion budget will include about$1.8 billion in tax relief and $700 million more annually into Medicaid funding for nursing homes.
