High school baseball

Ottawa  won big over Rochelle 11-1 in 5 innings at Masinelli Field. The Pirates Jack Olson had a strong performance pitching 5 innings and 10 strikeouts. Payton Knoll also had a good day at the plate with 3 hits.

 

 Streator won at home over Peotone 4-0 in an IC8 conference matchup. The Bulldog’s pitcher Christian Benning earned the win with a complete game shutout and Brady Grabowski blasted  a two run homer.

 

Newark won at home  over Hiawatha 10-0. Joe Martin went 4 innings and pitched 11 strikeouts.

 

Earlville lost to Annawan 18-2 and Mendota held on to win at home over St Bede 6-4.

 

In Softball

Ottawa won big at King Field over Plano 15-0. For the Lady Pirates, pitcher McKenzie Oslanzi allowed one hit and struck out six and batted a pair of singles and a double with five RBIs. Ryleigh Stehl and Kendall Lowery each added two-run base hits.

 

Serena were winners at Woodland 13-2. Lanee Cole and Paisley Twait both homered for the Lady Huskers and pitcher Maddie Glade went 7 innings with 11 strikeouts.

 

Streator were winners at home over Peotone 7-1.  The Lady Bulldogs Jaelyn Blakemore pitched 7 innings with 13 strikeouts.

 

Newark won at home over Hiawatha 17-1. Kaitlyn Schofield pitched 7 strikeouts and homered for the Lady Norsemen.

 

Seneca defeated Prairie Central 15-3. Kennedy Hartwig and  Zoe Hougas each homered for the Lady Irish.

 

The Streator boys tennis team competed in a triangular event with St Bede and their host LP.  winners for the Bulldogs were Davey Rashid  and Ryan Beck in singles.

 

Seneca hosted a 7 team invitational in track and field. For the boys, Seneca finished 2nd and Streator placed 3rd. In the girls division, Seneca were winners with Newark placing 2nd and Streator taking  fifth.

 

Elsewhere in sports

Kansas is the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Champions.  The Jayhawks defeated North Carolina 72-69 in New Orleans.  Kansas trailed by 16 points in the first half to complete the largest comeback in championship game history. It’s the first championship since 2008 for the Kansas program.   

 

The Cubs defeated the White Sox 15-9 in spring action in Mesa, Arizona.  Ian Happ and Nick Madrigal both homered in the  fifth for the Northsiders.  The Cubs visit the Brewers today in their final spring tuneup.  The Sox visit the Padres today in their final spring game.

 

The Sox also announced yesterday, Lucas Giolito will take the mound on Opening Day in Detroit to face the Tigers on Friday. Listen to the game right here on 93.5 & 1430 WCMY 

 

The Cardinals defeated the Nationals 4-3 in Jupiter, Florida.  The Cards visit the Marlins today in their final spring game.  

 

St Louis announced yesterday that Albert Pujols will serve as the team’s designated hitter in Thursday’s season opener against the Pirates.  Pujols will make his 22nd consecutive Opening Day start, The 42-year-old is one short of tying Pete Rose, who holds the record at 23.

 

The Chicago Bulls are back in action tonight taking on the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks. The Bulls look to move up in the playoff positioning, currently fifth in the standings at 45-and-33.   

 

Over in the PGA, Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, was the center of attention during Monday’s practice rounds at Augusta National Golf Club. The 15-time major champion hasn’t played in a PGA Tour event in more than 17 months after suffering serious injuries in a February 2021 car wreck. Woods told reporters  that doctors nearly amputated his right leg.
