To keep old medicine from ending up in places it shouldn’t be, there’s a National DEA Drug Take Back Day. The Drug Enforcement Agency urges local governments to accept old medicine for proper disposal. That special day will be on Saturday, April 30th.

But some local governments can take things anytime. LaSalle County Coroner Rich Ploch says anything that’s not a spray or liquid can go in drug drop-off boxes at the jail and both county courthouses. Needles can go back to the pharmacy. Liquids can be soaked up with cat litter and thrown away.

Ploch says the county collected more than 500 pounds of old drugs last year. The two big reasons to get rid of them that way are to protect the environment and to keep addictive drugs away from addicts.
