Yesterday in high school baseball

Ottawa were winners in their season opener on the road at Seneca 4-1. The Pirates’ Peyton Mangold had 2 innings pitched, 1 hit and 5 strikeouts. The win gave new Ottawa head coach Tyler Wargo his first varsity win in his first game.

Streator opened their season at home with a win over Woodland Flanagan-Cornell 17-1. Starting Pitcher for the Bulldogs was Adam Williamson with 2 innings pitched no runs allowed and 4 strikeouts.

LP lost on the road to Yorkville 2-0. Josh Senica threw 3 innings with 2 strikeouts and 1 earned run for the Cavaliers in the loss.

St Bede lost a close one at home to Somonauk 4-3. Brendan Roberts went 4 innings, 2 runs allowed with 9 strikeouts for the Bobcats in the win.

Games scheduled today in varsity baseball: Marquette will host Lexington and Seneca is home to face GSW.

 

Girls varsity softball games scheduled for today: Ottawa will host Kankakee, Marquette is home to face Streator and Seneca is also home to take on GSW.

 

Last night in the first four round  of the NCAA Men’s Tournament

Wright State knocked off Bryant 93-82, while Notre Dame took care of Rutgers in double overtime 89-87. The Irish will meet sixth-seeded Alabama tomorrow in San Diego.

Illinois basketball standout Kofi Cockburn has been voted a first-team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Cockburn is on track to be a first-team All-America designation by the NCAA.

The Fighting Illini earned the fourth-seed in the South Region and open up against Chattanooga tomorrow.

 

The Bulls are still winless on their road trip after a 125-110 setback to the Jazz in Utah.  Zach LaVine scored a team-high 33 points for the Bulls  who closed out their three-game road swing tomorrow in Phoenix against the NBA leading Suns.

 

The Chicago Cubs are locking up Japanese star outfielder Seiya Suzuki with a five-year, 85-million-dollar contract. The deal is the largest ever for a Japanese position player. 

 

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are headed to Monday Night Football.  ESPN announced it has signed the NFL’s longest running broadcast duo to multi-year deals.  Buck and Aikman will make their Monday Night Football debut on September 12th.
