At Massinelli Field in Ottawa on Tuesday, the Marquette Crusaders baseball team scored 20 runs in the first two innings and dominated St. Bede 22-to-4. Tommy Durdan and Hayden McKenna each had two hits and five RBIs. On the road, the Marquette Lady Crusaders had only four hits and fell to Kewanee 14-to-2 in five innings. Today, the Ottawa Pirates start the baseball season on the road at Seneca. The Ottawa Lady Pirates begin Softball on Thursday against Kankakee.
Two teams are moving on in the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament. Texas Southern defeated Texas A&M-CC 76-67 and Indiana took care of Wyoming 66-58 in the First Four in Dayton on Tuesday night. With the win, Texas Southern will be the 16-seed against one-seed Kansas on Thursday. Indiana will be the 12th-seed against five-seed Saint Mary’s. On tap for Wednesday night, Bryant and Wright State meet in a battle of 16-seeds in Dayton, while Notre Dame and Rutgers clash as 11-seeds.
The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament tips off tonight with two play-in games. The first matchup has Number-16 seeds Howard and Incarnate Word squaring off. The winner will play overall Number-1 seed South Carolina. Tonight’s second game pits DePaul against Dayton. The winner of that game will face Number-6 seed Georgia.
The Bulls continue their road trip. Chicago plays the Utah Jazz tonight in Salt Lake City. Zach LaVine is questionable to play with a knee injury while Lonzo Ball and Patrick Williams are both out. The Bulls enter at 41-and-27, while Utah is 42-and-26.
The Blackhawks earned a point, but ultimately suffered a loss. Chicago lost at home to the Boston Bruins 2-1 in overtime. Brandon Hagel scored the Blackhawks’ lone goal in the third period. It was Hagel’s 21st goal of the season. Marc-Andre Fleury was excellent with 46 saves and two goals allowed. Chicago dropped to 22-30-and-9. The Blackhawks play the Minnesota Wild on the road on Saturday.
The Bears are addressing both sides of the ball in free agency. Multiple reports say the Bears signed Raiders linebacker Nicholas Morrow and Packers offensive lineman Lucas Patrick. ESPN is reporting that Patrick signed a two-year contract worth 8-million dollars. Patrick started 13 games last season with Green Bay. Morrow has 78 tackles, three sacks and one interception last season with the Raiders.
The Cubs are adding to their bullpen. The MLB Network is reporting that the Cubs are signing right-handed reliever Chris Martin to a one-year deal. The contract is reportedly worth 2.5-million dollars. The 35-year-old recorded a 3.95 ERA in 46 appearances last season with the Atlanta Braves.
One of the Cardinals’ best pitchers got looked at yesterday. The Cardinals announced that Jack Flaherty underwent a medical evaluation on his right shoulder on Tuesday. The results of the evaluation are not yet known. The right-hander went 9-and-2 last season with a 3.22 ERA.
