St. Sen. Sue Rezin was among 43 lawmakers in the chamber voting yes yesterday on what some call the Jelani Day Bil.. St. Sen. Brian Stewart didn’t vote. The bill would require police departments to notify the FBI 72 hours after human remains are discovered if they haven’t identified who they came from.

Jelani Day’s name isn’t in the bill as shown on the Illinois General Assembly website. But his case is its inspiration. Day disappeared six months ago and his body was found in the Illinois River in LaSalle County. His friends, family, and many others don’t believe the coroner’s determination that Day drowned. They have criticized local police handling of the case.

The bill now goes to the Illinois House.
