In girls varsity basketball

The game you heard here on WCMY, At the Class 1A Midland regional Championship, Serena were winners over Marquette 45-30. Katie Baker led the Lady Huskers with 22 points. For the Lady Crusaders, Lilly Craig scored nine points and Josie Eager added 8 more in the final game of the season.

Newark won the championship over St Bede 64-35 at the 1A Dwight Regional.

Seneca lost to Fieldcrest 30-17 in the Class 2A Seneca regional Championship. Kennedy Hartwig finished her season with 11 points for the Lady Irish.

In the boys varsity regionals

On WCMY,  in the Class 1A Serena regional, Marquette started their post season journey at Bader Gym and dominated Bridgeview Universal 73-42. Logan Nelson led the Crusaders with 19 points, Griffin Walker finished with 14 points and Alex Graham 12 more in the victory. Marquette will now face Newark in the semi-final at Serena high school on Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday the Ottawa Pirates begin their postseason taking Dunlap at the Rock Island Class 3A Regional. Listen to the game here on WCMY at 7:30.

At the Class 3A Rochelle Regional. Streator won at home over LP 62-40 at Pops Dale Gymnasium. Jack Starkey led the Bulldogs with 23 points, Jack Haynes posted 19 points, 11 rebounds and Christian Benning added 18 points for Streator who will face Sterling on Wednesday at Rochelle high school in the semi-final round.

In the Class 2A Wilmington Regional, Seneca played host to Fieldcrest and won 70-62. Calvin Maierhofer scored 22 points for the Fighting Irish, Paxton Giertz added 17 more in the victory.

Serena defeated Grant Park 82 -63 at the 1A Serena Regional, Ben Shugrue had a big performance for the Huskers scoring 35 points, Camden Figgins scored 15 points also for Serena who will play Yorkville Christian at home on Wednesday in the semifinal round.

 

Other regional results in varsity basketball:

  • Newark defeated Illinois Lutheran 79-30 at the 1A Serena Regional.
  • At the 1A Indian Creek Regional, Somonauk won big over LaMoille 79-29 and Earlville were winners over AFC 80-40.

The LP Co-Op swim team competed at the United Township Sectional. The LP / Ottawa team placed 5th with Ryan Nelson winning the 100 freestyle and finished 2nd in the 50 freestyle. Joe Ovanic won the 100 butterfly and finished 2nd in the 100 backstroke. Both Nelson and Ovanic qualified and will advance to the IHSA State Meet on Friday and Saturday at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont.
