Update: State senator and representative condemn governor for not creating veterans’ unit

Republican St Rep. David Welter and Republican St Sen. Sue Rezin are denouncing Gov. Pritzker for not taking action on legislation that would create a veterans’ accountability unit with the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs. But the law will take effect in June, even though the governor didn’t sign or veto it after the sixty day period.

The unit would receive complaints and recommendations from veterans and other Illinois residents who want to help the department. Welter says the governor’s response is woefully inadequate, especially in the wake of the fatal COVID-19 outbreak at the LaSalle veterans’ home.

Rezin says the Pritzker administration has a history of making careless mistakes when caring for veterans with catastrophic consequences. Ottawa Democrat St Rep. Lance Yednock is also a sponsor of the bill.
