Pandemic or not, bald eagles are perching in the trees by Starved Rock Lock and Dam like they do every winter. But there won’t be any raptor programs or other indoor events for Eagle Watch Weekend this Saturday and Sunday. Lisa Sons with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources at Starved Rock State Park says there’ll still be eagle watching.

Guided hikes start at 11am and 2pm each day. Those are by reservation and the slots are taken. But Sons says there are always no-shows. Show up ten minutes early and you have a chance of getting in. You can also hike on your own.

Sons says the number of eagles perching varies day to day depending on where the birds go to catch fish. In deep cold spells, more waterways freeze and more eagles go to locks and dams where the water still flows. Eagle Watch Weekend is at the state park and at the Illinois Waterway Visitors Center on the other side of the river.
