The Lady Pirate Holiday Tournament, Ottawa finished in 2nd place after a tough loss to Metamora 37-16 in the Championship game at Kingman Gym.  Zoe Harris scored five points and four rebounds, while Brooke Waddell and Kendall Lowery each finished with three points for The Lady Pirates.

LP were winners over Newark 53-38. Brooklyn Ficek led the way with 21 points and Addison Duttlinger added 13 for the Lady Cavaliers. Kellie Snyder led the Lady Norseman with 11 points.

Streator lost to Pontiac 38-32. Marisa Vickers had 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

 Streator also fell short to Morris 49-20 in their 2nd matchup of the day.

 

Final results from the Lady Bruins Christmas Classic

St Bede defeated Kewanee 50-37 in the 7th place game. Seneca won the 5th place contest over Yorkville Christian 59-38. Putnam County took 3rd place by defeating Eureka 32-30 and Fieldcrest won the Championship with victory over Princeton 57-25.

 

There was a boys game last night. Earlville lost on the road to Yorkville Christian 94-51. Griffin Cook led the Red Raiders with 19 points.

 

Elsewhere in sports

Last night’s game between the Bulls and Raptors in Chicago was postponed because of COVID-19 issues with Toronto.  No make-up date for the game has been announced.  The Bulls will be back in action Sunday to host the Pacers.

 

The Tennessee Titans host San Francisco on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 16 in an important battle for playoff positioning. The Titans lead the AFC South at 9-and-5.  At 8-and-6, the 49ers enter tonight’s matchup as the sixth seed in the NFC.

 

College Basketball

Illinois breezed to an 88-63 victory over Missouri in the 41st edition of the Braggin’ Rights game. The Illini’s Kofi Cockburn scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double. It was the 35th double-double of Cockburn’s career.

Notre Dame knocked off Texas A&M-CC 83-73.

 

College Football News

At the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.  Army defeated Missouri 24-22.

 

Texas A&M announced it will not participate in this year’s Gator Bowl against Number-17 Wake Forest in Jacksonville, due to ongoing issues with COVID-19. Both Marshall and Illinois are interested as replacements for the game on December 31st.

 

A new policy is being implemented in college football as a response to the surge in omicron cases across the country.  The College Football Playoff management committee says that a team can advance, or win, the national championship by an opponent forfeiting. The changes also state that the January 10th championship game can be potentially pushed back as late as the 14th.  If one team can play but the other can’t due to COVID, they would have to forfeit if the game can’t be rescheduled.
