Ottawa police notice uptick in phone scam calls

Ottawa Detective Sgt. Kyle Booras says the Ottawa Police Department has seen an uptick in telephone scams. Booras says a majority of scams are carried out to get personal and banking information.

He says two common scams include phone calls about a person’s extended warranty on their car and the other is people calling and claiming to with Amazon Fraud or Apple Fraud. He says the callers will ask for gift cards or money orders.

The police department says never send gift cards or wire cash to any person you are unfamiliar with. Any scam can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission.
