Oglesby City Commissioner Jason Curran says he’s glad the property tax levy came to the council a little earlier this year. But he still thinks the city shouldn’t raise its amount by almost 5% every year when it’s running a surplus.

Keeping the increase below 5% avoids a truth-in-taxation hearing. Other people on the council say the city needs to keep bringing in money and adding to the surplus to fund big upcoming projects instead of borrowing money for them. Commissioner Thomas Argubright took that side when the council talked about the $1 million levy this week.

The City Council could adopt the levy next week.
