At the Falcon-Irish Thanksgiving Tournament,  Marquette won big over Dwight 59-20. For the Lady Crusaders: Lilly Craig led the team with 15 points, 5 rebs and 3 steals, Avery Durdan had 10 pts, 6 rebs and Josie Eager finished with 9 pts, 7 assists, 5 steals.

 

High School football playoffs are now in the semi final round and in the Class 5A Sycamore will face Fenwick at Triton College on Saturday afternoon.

 

Junior high sports

Both Marquette Academy girls teams competed in the conference championship games.

The 8th grade team took 2nd place after falling short to Wallace 43-33. Sophia Falaney led the Lady Warriors with 19 points. Hunter Hopkins finished with 15 points for the Lady Knights.

The 7th graders won the championship by defeating Wallace 35-23. Anna Hjerpe led the Lady Knights with a game high 15 points. Kaitlyn Davis scored 7 points for the Lady Warriors.

 

Both Shepherd girls basketball teams finished the regular season by defeating Morris Saratoga.

The 8th Graders won 26-19. Top scorers for the Lady Rams, Belle Markey had 7 points, Mary Stisser with 6, Kindley Moore had 5 and Skylar Nodland with 4 points. 

 

The 7th Grade team won 14-9. Meredith Waldron had 6 points and Reese Purcell added 4 more for Shepherd. 7th Grade finished the regular season 20-4 and will be the #1 seed in the IESA Shepherd Regional.

 

Elsewhere in sports

The Patriots extended their winning streak to five games with a 25-0 victory over the Falcons in Atlanta on Thursday Night Football. 

 

The 3-6 Bears will host the 6-3 Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Soldier Field.

 

College football this weekend, Notre Dame hosts Georgia Tech, Northwestern takes on Purdue at Wrigley Field, Western Illinois is at Northern Iowa, Eastern Illinois hosts Murray State, Illinois State welcomes Indiana State, and Southern Illinois hosts Youngstown State. 

 

Results in college basketball yesterday,  DePaul defeated Rutgers 73-70, Northwestern dominated Fairleigh Dickinson 82-46, and Eastern Illinois rolled past Rockford University 96-64.

 

The Chicago Bulls wrap up a five-game West Coast trip when they visit the Denver Nuggets tonight.  The Bulls fell 112-107 to the Trail Blazers on Wednesday.  

 

Troy Brouwer is retiring from the NHL after 14 seasons.  The 36-year-old  Brouwer was selected by the Blackhawks in the seventh round of the 2004 NHL Draft and won the Stanley Cup with the Hawks in 2010.

 

Over in the PGA,  Sebastian Munoz is leading the RSM Classic after shooting a career best 60 in the first round at Saint Simons Island in Georgia. 

 

Major League Baseball

The Phillies’ Bryce Harper and Shohei Ohtani of the Angels are making history with their Most Valuable Player Awards.  It’s the first time since 1987 both MVPs came from non-playoff teams. Harper won NL MVP honors for the second time in his career. Ohtani earned AL MVP honors for the first time.
