Annual tax levy request–and explanation–from Seneca High School

Seneca High School Supt. Dan Stecken says not a lot of people ask about it, but he’s ready to explain the tax levy request. The school district will publish a notice that says it’s asking for 8% more than the $12.7 million received this year. That would bring in $1 million more.

Stecken says the school district won’t get it though. As part of an agreement between 11 taxing districts including Seneca High and Exelon Generation, the district abates some of the tax request every year. That’s the legalistic way of saying it says never mind to receiving some of the money.

Stecken says one or two people ask about the tax levy request every year after seeing it advertised in the newspaper. He explains that the announcement routinely tells of a bigger increase than is actually coming. That agreement between Exelon and 11 taxing district sets how much the LaSalle Station nuclear power plant is assessed for property taxes. Negotiations on a new agreement are expected to start in the spring.
