Friday Local Sports Update

 Tune in to WCMY tonight for round one of postseason high school football when the Marquette Crusaders host Princeville at Gould Stadium. Kickoff is at 7pm. Listen to Isaac Missel and Andrew Evola with the call of the game on 93.5 and 1430 WCMY and streaming online at 1430 WCMY DOT COM.

Other postseason football scheduled this weekend:

Tonight: In the Class 1A, St Bede will play host to Chicago Hope Academy. Class 3A, Princeton will host North Boone and In Class 5A, LP will be at Morris, Sycamore is at Evergreen Park, Kaneland is at Fenwick and Rochelle will host Payton.

On Saturday: In Class 3A, Mendota will be at Du-Pec Co-op. Class 4A, Plano will travel to Kewanee and In Class 5A, Sterling will host St. Patrick

 

Results in postseason volleyball, at the Class 1A Henry-Se-nach-wine Regional St. Bede defeated Woodland to claim the regional title. Also  in Class 1A,  Newark got the victory  over Earlville at the Indian Creek Regional to become regional champs.

 

In junior high girls basketball

All three grades  at Marquette Academy competed at Waltham school. The 8th grade team lost 24-3, the Academy’s Hunter Hopkins scored 6 points in the loss. The 7th graders won 45-6 with Hunter Hopkins leading the way with 15 points for the Lady Knights. And the 6th graders won 22-4. For the Academy, Kinley Rick had 20 points and Jakobi Reed added 2 more.

 

Elsewhere in sports

The Bulls’ late comeback fell short in a 104-103 loss to the Knicks at the United Center.  It was the first defeat of the season for Chicago, which dropped to 4-and-1.   The Bulls host the Jazz tomorrow night

 

The Braves will host the Astros in Game Three of the World Series tonight.  Ian Anderson will start for the Braves,  Luis Garcia will take the mound for Houston.  The series is tied at 1-1.

 

The Blackhawks visit the Hurricanes tonight and are seeking their  first win of the season.  The Hawks dropped to 0-5-and-2 after losing to the Maple Leafs in overtime Wednesday.

 

Former Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville is resigning as head coach of the Florida Panthers. Quenneville came under scrutiny when the investigation into the Blackhawks abuse case found that he was aware that video coach Brad Aldrich sexually assaulted a player in 2010 and did nothing about it. 

 

Last night the Packers defeated the Cardinals 24-21 in Arizona on Thursday Night Football.

 

The Chicago Bears host the 49ers on Sunday.  The Bears are  looking to get back on track having lost two straight and are now 3-and-4. San Francisco’s record is 2-and-4. 

 

College football this weekend

Illinois welcomes Rutgers to Memorial Stadium.  The Illini enters at 3-and-5, and the Scarlet Knights are 3-and-4.   In other college football action, Notre Dame will hosts UNC, Northwestern welcomes Minnesota,  Eastern Illinois is at Southeast Missouri, Western Illinois hosts Illinois State.
