Monday Local Sports Update

Over the weekend the IHSA announced the 2021 brackets for postseason high school football:

In the Class 1A

Marquette will host Princeville and  St Bede will play host to Chicago Hope Academy both games are scheduled for Friday Night.

In Class 3A

Princeton will host North Boone Friday night. Mendota will be at Du-Pec Co-op on Saturday 

Class 4A

Plano will travel to Kewanee on Saturday afternoon

In Class 5A

LP will be at Morris, Sycamore is at Evergreen Park and Kaneland is at Fenwick those games are scheduled for Friday night. Sterling will host St. Patrick and Rochelle will host Payton both games have not set a date or time yet.

 

In Cross Country 

At the Class 2A La Salle-Peru Regional. For the boys The Morris team finished fifth and The LP team placed sixth to advance to the 2A Metamora Sectional next week. Also advancing to the Sectional is Streator’s Kody Danko who placed fifth overall. 

In the girls race, Morris finished third and Ottawa earned sixth-place to advance to the Metamora Sectional next week. Grace Carroll led the Lady Pirates by placing 16th overall.

Also in cross country, The Seneca team competed at the St Bede Class 1A Regional and won the Regional title in the girls division. Evelyn O’Connor was the Champion in the girls race and Ashley Alsvig finished 3rd. Marquette’s Maggie Jewett placed 5th and earned an individual spot at the Class 1A Oregon Sectional on Saturday.

 

In the boys race, Seneca took 3rd place. For the Irish, Austin Aldridge finished 7th. For Marquette, Jimmy Lawsha placed 19th to finish the season.

 

The LP Co-op swim team took second place at the Northern Illinois Independent Invitational

Peyton Heagy won the 100-yard freestyle and second in the 50 freestyle. Heagy competed with Addy Nance, Paige Marks and Kailey Goetsch to take second in the 200 medley relay.

 

Elsewhere in sports

After the weekend the World Series is now set.  The Braves are headed to their first Fall Classic since 1999, and are in search of their first title since ’95.  Houston will be seeking its second title ever after winning it all in 2017.  Game One of the World Series is set for Tuesday night in Houston.

 

The Chicago Bears were dominated 38-3 by the Buccaneers in Tampa.  Justin Fields accounted for all five Bears turnovers in the game with three interceptions and two lost fumbles. Tampa’s Tom Brady set the NFL record after throwing his 600th career touchdown pass. The Bears host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

 

The Blackhawks are still winless after losing 6-3 to the Red Wings at the United Center. The Hawks who are now 0-5-and-1 and will host the Maple Leafs Wednesday. 

 

The Chicago Bulls will visit the Raptors tonight in Toronto. The Bulls improved to 3-and-0 after beating the Pistons 97-82 Saturday.

 

Illinois upset number-eight Penn State 20-18 on Saturday at Beaver Stadium in the first nine-overtime game in College football history.  The Illini won on a two-point conversion pass after the Nittany Lions missed their attempt.  Illinois had two running backs that together finished with over 365 yards rushing .The Fighting Illini improved to 3-and-5.  They host Rutgers on Saturday.
