AP top ten poll for IHSA football was released:

In Class 1A Marquette stayed in the 7th ranked position, St Bede moved up from 9th to 8th ranked. For Class 3A Princeton kept the 6th spot. In Class 5A, Morris climbed one spot from 4th to 3rd ranked and Sycamore held on to the 10th spot.

 

The Ottawa Varsity volleyball team lost on the road to LP in an Interstate 8 Conference matchup. Top performers for the Lady Pirate in the loss were Allie Snyder, Olivia Evola, Brea Konwinski, Chey Joachim and Ryleigh Stevenson 

 

Also in volleyball, Streator won at Reed-Custer. For the Lady Bulldogs, Mallory Goerne had 7 kills, 2 digs and 1 ace, Devin Elias earned 3 kills, 1 block and  Alexa Jacobs had 2 kills, 3 blocks.

     

The JV squad lost to Reed Custer.  Zuzu Gonzalez finished with 6 kills, 6 assists and 2 aces for Streator in the loss.

 

At the Class 1A Illinois Valley Central Sectional semifinals in soccer. Mendota shut out Peoria Christian 3-0 and will face Quincy Notre Dame in the finals.

 

In Junior High Girls basketball

Both Shepherd grade levels defeated Sandwich. The 8th Grade Lady Rams won 40-4. Leading the way for Shepherd were Aubrey Sullivan with 12 points and Kindley Moore scoring 8. The 7th Graders won 35-12. Top performers for the Rams were Ashlyn Ganiere with 15 points and Meredith Waldron scoring 14.

 

Elsewhere in sports

Last night in the MLB playoffs, The Dodgers plated four runs in the eighth inning in a comeback to beat the Braves 6-5 in Game Three.  Cody Bellinger again came up in the clutch as he tied the game at 5 with his three-run homer in the eighth.  Mookie Betts followed that up with an RBI double to put the Dodgers ahead.  Los Angeles now trails the series 2-1.  Game Four is tonight. 

 

The Astros evened the ALCS at two games apiece after a win in Game Four.  Houston scored seven times with two outs in the ninth inning to escape Fenway Park with a 9-2 win over the Red Sox.  Jose Altuve hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning and Michael Brantley broke the game open with a bases clearing double in the ninth.  Game Five is this afternoon. 

 

The Blackhawks remain winless this season after losing their home opener 4-1 to the New York Islanders.  MacKenzie Entwistle netted his first goal of the season for the Hawks and Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 stops as the Hawks dropped to 0-3-and-1.  The Blackhawks continue their homestand tomorrow night when the Vancouver Canucks visit the United Center.    

 

The Chicago Bulls open the season tonight in Detroit against the Pistons.  The Bulls finished the preseason 4-and-0.  Tonight will be the first regular season action in a Bulls uniform for all the new additions, including DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball, and Alex Caruso. 

 

Over in the MLS, The Chicago Fire visit Cincinnati tonight.  The Fire earned a 2-2 tie against New England this past Saturday.
