At the Ottawa Class 1A Sectional in tennis

The Lady Pirates won their fifth title in a row at the King Field courts. LP came in 2nd, Morris was third. Coal City was fourth, Mendota was 5th and Streator finished 6th.

Ottawa’s Ella Marvel won the singles title with Sara Meyer placing second. Kyleigh Olszewski and Jenna Smithmeyer placed fourth in doubles.. 

For the LP Cavaliers, the team of Catherine Engels and Ava Lannen placed second in doubles.

The Lady Pirates will move on to the IHSA State Finals on Thursday in the north suburbs

 

Results in cross country

Ottawa competed in an I-8 conference meet at Kaneland. The Varsity boys finished 7th. Top performers for the Pirates were Liam Tipple and Cole Smelko. In the girls race, Grace Carroll made All-Conference placing 4th.

The JV girls team finished 3rd with Addy Miller taking 2nd and Hailey Larsen placing 5th. 

 

Seneca defeated both Marquette and their host Streator in a triangular matchup.  The Irish  Austin Aldridge was the meet champion for the boys with Brady Danek finishing 3rd. For the Lady Irish, Evelyn O’Connor was the meet champion on the girls side followed by Audrey Jenkins in 3rd.

Seneca volleyball team competed at the Bradley-Bourbonnais Invitational. Seneca won games over Momence, Joliet Central, and tournament champions, Belleville West. Emma Smith for the Irish was named to the all tournament team.

 

Elsewhere in sports

The Chicago Sky are WNBA champions for the first time in team history.  The Sky secured the title after erasing an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Phoenix Mercury 80-74 in game four of the WNBA Finals at Wintrust Arena. Kahleah Copper was named WNBA Finals MVP.  

 

The Bears’ struggles against the Packers continue after losing 24-14 to Green Bay at Soldier Field.  Aaron Rodgers scored a six-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Packers.  Justin Fields threw for 174 yards, a touchdown, and a pick in the loss.  Khalil Herbert rushed for 97 yards and a TD for Chicago, which has lost five straight to Green Bay.  The Bears will visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

 

The Steelers won in overtime over the Seahawks 23-20 in Pittsburgh on Sunday Night Football.

 

For a second straight night, the Braves walked off with a win in the NLCS.  Eddie Rosario hit a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to help the Braves beat the Dodgers 5-4 in Game Two.  Atlanta takes a 2-0 series lead as it got a walk-off victory in back-to-back games. 

 

The ALCS continues tonight as the Astros and Red Sox meet in Boston for Game Three.  After Houston won the series opener, Boston stormed back to even the series with a 9-5 win in Game Two.  

 

In college football over the weekend, Northwestern topped Rutgers 21-7, NIU defeated Bowling Green 34-26, Eastern Illinois fell 28-17 to UT Martin, Western Illinois was routed by South Dakota State 41-17 and The ISU Redbirds was blanked by North Dakota State 20-0.

 

In NASCAR, Kyle Larson made it back to back wins as he won the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday.
