Update for Friday morning

The Mazon area was blocked off for about three hours late yesterday afternoon to evening while police looked for a man who allegedly shot at a Grundy County deputy. The deputy went to Morris Hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm. He was also hit twice in his protective vest.

The sheriff’s department says the 18-year old man who shot the deputy got into two crashes driving away from a traffic stop and then ran away on foot. Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland was outside his home and heard the shots the sheriff’s department says were fired during the chase.

The deputy was reported to be in stable condition last night. Police arrested the man who allegedly shot him at an apartment after 8pm.

A Grundy County Sheriff’s deputy was shot in the arm during a chase late this afternoon. The sheriff’s department says the deputy began a traffic stop at Illinois 47 and DuPont Rd. and the driver sped away getting into two crashes until he got out of his car. A chase on foot began at Illinois 47 at Grand Ridge Rd. north of Mazon. The department says the man shot at the deputy several times during the foot chase.

An ambulance took the deputy to the Morris Hospital emergency room. Several police agencies looked for the driver for about three hours. Meanwhile, many people in the area got alerts on their cell phones warning them to lock their doors and stay inside. Mazon was locked down during the search.
