The Utica Fire Protection District says only recreational fires are allowed until further notice. And those must be in specially designated areas away from buildings and other things that can burn. Recreational fires are for cookouts and camping. Someone must always be with them ready to put out the fire if it starts getting out of hand, and the fire must be thoroughly put out when people leave. Anyone burning garbage, leaves, or other things just to get rid of them risks being fined.

Some other communities, including Cedar Point and Lostant, have complete burn bans right now because of the dry weather. Mendota issued a burning ban this morning.
