St. Sen. Brian Stewart of the 45th District says the new energy bill will raise electric rates. The Freeport Republican says he would have supported just the parts that keep the Byron nuclear power plant open if they were in a bill by themselves. He says the bill as a package sets up a process that will eventually work against nuclear power plants. Stewart says the big wind and solar power company subsidies in the bill will be paid for by electric customers. That, he says, will drive businesses and manufacturers out of the state.
