A Michigan man accused of shooting at Oglesby police and hiding from them late last year is asking for a trial by judge. Thirty-five year old Peter D. Bergsma was arrested east of the Illinois Valley Community College campus on December 29th. He had allegedly shot at two officers who were checking out why a recreational vehicle was parked on the college campus. The police weren’t hurt, but when they shot back, Bergsma got a graze wound on his head and fled.
Bergsma’s lawyer said in court earlier this year, he intends to argue that his client wasn’t sane at the time of the crime. But whatever came out of two interviews with psychiatrists hasn’t been made public. A trial is scheduled to start December 8th.
