Gavin Sheets didn’t waste any time after being called up from the minors by the White Sox.  Sheets hit a pair of homers in a 6-3 win over the Pirates at Guaranteed Rate Field.  Carlos Rodón tossed five-innings of one-run ball for the South-Siders, which swept the two-game set.  Liam Hendriks recorded his 31st save.  The Sox visit the Royals tomorrow night.

The Sox placed shortstop Tim Anderson on the 10-day injured list yesterday with a left hamstring strain.

 

Justin Steele and Adbert Alzolay combined for nine-shutout innings as the Cubs blanked the Twins 3-0 in Minneapolis.  Frank Schwindel drilled a three-run homer for the north-Siders, which swept the two-game series.  The Cubs host the Pirates tonight. 

 

The Cards split a day-night seven-inning doubleheader with the Reds in Cincinnati.  Paul Goldschmidt hit a pair of home runs and drove in three to lead St. Louis to a 5-4 win over the Reds in game one.  Génesis Cabrera earned the victory.  Nick Castellanos homered twice, including a grandslam, as Cincinnati took game two in dominant fashion, 12-2.  J.A. Happ suffered the loss after giving up seven runs in one-inning.  The Cards trail the Reds by two-and-a-half games for the second National League Wild Card spot. 

 

Illinois linebacker Calvin Hart Jr. is the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week.  The North Carolina State transfer made the most of his first start with the Illini this past Saturday in a 30-22 win over Nebraska at Memorial Stadium.  Hart recorded six tackles and recovered a fumble, returning it 41 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter before exiting the game with an injury.

Ottawa’s Gio Resendez scored four goals to lead the Pirates to a 6-0  road win over Morris in soccer. The Ottawa Pirates are now  7-0.

 

Also in soccer, Earlville won at home over Hinckley-Big Rock 2- 1 in overtime.

 

Streator defeated Lisle in golf at The Eastwood golf course. The Bulldogs Cole Parker shot a 41 to lead all golfers.
