Dylan Cease fired seven innings of one-run ball in a 5-2 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto.  José Abreu had three hits, including a three-run homer for the South-Siders which snapped a three-game losing streak.  Liam Hendriks knocked down his 29th save.

The Cubs and Rockies play a doubleheader today at Wrigley Field.  The twin bill was scheduled after last night’s game was postponed due to rain.  Zach Davies will start opposite Colorado righty Germán Márquez in Game one and Justin Steele will follow against lefty Austin Gomber in Game two.

 

The Cardinals late rally fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Tigers at Busch Stadium.  Nolan Arenado doubled in a pair in a three-run eighth inning for the Cards.  Jack Flaherty was tagged with the loss after giving up four-runs over two innings.  The righty exited early with shoulder tightness. 

Veteran catcher Yadier Molina  has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Cardinals that will keep him in St. Louis through 2022. The 39-year-old is a 10-time All-Star.  

 

Oakland A’s pitcher Chris Bassitt is recovering from successful facial surgery on Tuesday in Chicago.  Bassitt was on the mound last week when he was hit in the face by a line drive in a game against the White Sox.  

 

The Bears will start rookie quarterback Justin Fields during Saturday night’s preseason finale in Tennessee.  Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton won’t play against the Titans because he’s slated to start the Bears’ regular season opener September 12th against the Rams in Los Angeles. 

 

In Local sports

The Streator varsity girls lost to Dwight in Volleyball.   Mallory Goerne had 6 kills and3 aces and Ellie Isermann finished with 5 assists and1 kill for the Lady Bulldogs.

The JV team beat Dwight in two sets with Emma Rambo earning 10 assists and 2 kills for Streator.

Earlville won at home over South Beloit. Elizabeth Browder scored four kills and three aces for the Lady Raiders.

 

Seneca won on the road over the Hall Red Devils in two straight sets. The Lady Irish was led by Emma Smith with six kills and a block.

 

The Marquette Lady Crusades defeated Lexington in three sets.
