Outfielder Michael Hermosillo started for the first time for the Cubs in Cincinnati and the 2013 Ottawa Pirate graduate did not disappoint. Hermosillo blasted a two-run, 441-foot, second-inning homer off of pitcher Tyler Mahle. This was Hermosillo’s second major league home run and first as a member of the Cubs.
Ian Happ and Sergio Alcántara also homered for the North-Siders in the 7-1 victory over the Reds. The Cubs have won two straight following a 12-game losing streak and will host the Royals starting tomorrow.
Luis Robert drove in a pair as the White Sox edged the A’s 3-2 at Guaranteed Rate Field. Garrett Crochet replaced starter Lance Lynn after Lynn was ejected for throwing his belt at an official who questioned the pitcher for foreign substance. Liam Hendriks earned his 28th save for the South Siders.
The Sox wrap-up the home series with the A’s. Dylan Cease takes the mound for the Pale Hose to face Oakland’s Cole Irvin. Pre-game starts at 12:30 with the first pitch at 1:10 this afternoon on 93.5 and 1430 WCMY.
The Cardinals fell apart in the tenth in a 6-4 extra inning loss to the Brewers at Busch Stadium. Alex Reyes was tagged with both the defeat and the blown save after giving up four runs, three unearned, over two innings. The Cards look to avoid the sweep tonight.
The Chicago Fire fell 3-2 at Miami in the MLS. The Fire will face Orlando City on Saturday.
Over in the PGA, The pursuit for the FedEx Cup championship will make its first stop this week at The Northern Trust at the Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey. Only the top 70 players after this weekend’s event will qualify for the BMW Championship next week .
The second week of the NFL preseason gets underway tonight as the Eagles host the Patriots at The Linc in Philadelphia.

The Ottawa Varsity boys picked up a conference win in their season opener by defeating Kaneland 143-147 at the Deer Park Country Club. Drake Kauffman led the Pirates with a score of 33.
The JV team lost to Kaneland 164-199. Top scorer for Ottawa was Trennon Kammerer with a 46.
Streator defeated Eureka, 176-185 at the Eastwood golf course. Davey Rashid scored a 41 for the Bulldogs in the victory.
Seneca defeated Newark-Serena and Reed-Custer at the High Point golf course. Rylee Stenzel carded a score of 35 tying Seneca’s golf team’s record for lowest nine-hole round score in the Fighting Irish victory.
The LP girls team competed at the Metamora Fields in the ninth annual Red Bird Classic Golf Invitational. The Lady Cavaliers finished with a team score of 422 and was led by Avah Moriarty who finished with a score of 97.
