ComEd warns of scammers taking money purportedly to prevent shutoffs

Don’t believe anyone who calls you or shows up at your door to say you have to pay your electric bill with a gift card or a Bitcoin payment right away. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office says scammers are targeting ComEd customers.

ComEd spokesman Tom Dominguez says if you’re so late on your bill that your power will be shut off, ComEd won’t surprise you like that. It will send you a letter instead. And the company will try to help you keep the power on.

ComEd also won’t ask for gift cards or Bitcoin. Once you pay a scammer that way, your money is gone,

Dominguez says scammers are clever and can trick smart people. But he says be as smart as you can and call ComEd if such a scammer calls or visits. The telephone number is 1-800-EDISON1 (1-800-334-7661).
