Tim Anderson provided a Hollywood ending with a walk-off homer in the 9th to give the White Sox a 9-8 win over the Yankees at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa.  José Abreu, Eloy Jiménez, and Seby Zavala also launched balls into the cornfield for the Pale Hoes.   Liam Hendriks earned the win despite giving up the lead in the top of the ninth.  It was the first MLB game ever played in Iowa.  

The Sox and Yanks head back to the south side where the series will resume tomorrow. You can catch those games on 93.5 and 1430 WCMY.

 

The Cubs were swept by the Brewers following a blowout 17-4 loss at Wrigley Field.  Kyle Hendricks allowed nine runs over four innings to take the loss for the North-Siders.  Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel homered for the Cubs. 

 

Jake Arrieta’s second stint with the Cubs is over.  The club released the right-handed pitcher yesterday a day after he gave up eight runs in the Cubs’ 10-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.   Arrieta won the Cy Young Award in 2015 and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016.

 

Cubs catcher Willson Contreras is on the ten-day injured list.  Contreras recently tweaked his knee during pregame drills.  The setback is not considered serious.  

 

The Bulls dropped their third summer league game in Vegas to the Timberwolves 78-59.   The Bulls will face the Grizzlies on Sunday.

 

Bears fans will get a chance to see rookie quarterback Justin Fields play a lot in tomorrow’s preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field.  Head coach Matt Nagy says the first-year signal caller out of Ohio State will play into the second-half after starting QB Andy Dalton plays eight to ten snaps. 

 

Russell Henley is on top of the leaderboard after the first round at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.  

 

The NASCAR Cup Series will be at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday for the The Big Machine Vodka 400.

 

 

Local Sports

Yesterday the Ottawa golf team finished fourth at the 2021 Prep Tour-Illinois Junior Golf Association High School Showcase at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club.  Jonathan Cooper led the Pirates scoring a 74 earning a medal for tenth place. The event featured 15 teams and 90 players from some of the top golf programs in the state.

 

The LP boys golf team defeated Kewanee at the Baker Park Golf Course.  Carter Fenza led the Cavaliers with a score of 39.

 

The LP girls team were winners at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club by beating Metamora. The Lady Cavaliers were led by Grace Antle finishing the day with a score of 50.
