Gift of Hope is reaching out to minorities to get more people to sign up as organ and tissue donors. The organization says 60% of people waiting for organs are non-white, but just 30% of registered organ and tissue donors are. Hospital and Partner Relations Manager Caitlyn Stephen says it’s not enough to just sign up as a donor. You need to talk to your family about it so it’s not an agonizing surprise right after you die.
Donating organs can help eight people, and donating tissues can help 25 or more. August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month.
