Brian Goodwin’s walk-off home run lifted the White Sox over the Indians, 2-1, at Guaranteed Rate Field.  José Abreu recorded the Sox other RBI and Liam Hendriks earned the win in relief for the South-Siders, who took two of three in the series.  The Sox will host the Royals tomorrow night.

 

Rafael Ortega hit three home runs and drove in five, but it wasn’t enough for the Cubs who fell 6-5 to the Nationals at Nationals Park.  Manuel Rodríguez was tagged with the loss for the North-Siders which has dropped five of six.  The Cubs visit the Rockies tomorrow night.  

 

Edmundo Sosa and Paul Goldschmidt each drove in two runs in the Cardinals 7-3 win over the Twins at Busch Stadium.  Dylan Carlson chipped in with three hits and an RBI.  Adam Wainwright gave up three earned runs in seven innings to pick up the win for St. Louis, which has split its last four.  The Cards host the Braves tomorrow night.

 

Cardinal catcher Yadier Molina passed former teammate Albert Pujols on the Cards’ all-time hits list with two-thousand-and-74.  

 

The Chicago Fire earned a point in a 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park.   The Fire will return home to host New York City on Wednesday.

 

The US Men’s national team defeated Mexico 1-0 in soccer to win in the Gold Cup Final in Las Vegas.  It’s the men’s team’s first Gold Cup since 2017. 

 

The NBA Free Agency period will officially get underway this evening.  Teams will be allowed to negotiate terms with players.  Deals cannot be officially signed until after midnight on Friday, when the new league year begins.  

 

Over in the Olympic in Tokyo 

After previously withdrawing from the all-around competition and the three other event finals, gymnast Simone Biles will be competing in Tuesday’s balance beam final.

 

The 21-year-old gymnast Jade Carey  won the gold medal on floor exercise. The medal is the fifth claimed by the U.S. women’s gymnastics team.

 

The United States women’s basketball team beat France 93-82, but it wasn’t easy as they trailed early in the fourth quarter.

 

The US swim team is bringing home more Olympic gold.  In one of the longest races of the Games, Bobby Finke won the 1500-meter swimming freestyle.  This is THE second gold medal in Tokyo for Finke after an unexpected win earlier this week in the 800-meter freestyle.   

 

The United States women’s soccer team were knocked out of gold medal contention after losing 1-0 to Canada in the semifinals. The US team has now failed to reach the final in back-to-back Olympics after suffering defeat at the hands of Sweden in the quarterfinals in Rio 2016.
