The White Sox acquired second baseman César Hernández from Cleveland in exchange for left-hander Konnor Pilkington. The Sox also made a trade with the crosstown rival Cubs, acquiring right-handed reliever Ryan Tepera in exchange for Minor League left-hander Bailey Horn.
Cubs fans say goodbye to Anthony Rizzo. The Cubs traded the first baseman to the Yankees for outfield prospect Kevin Alcántara and pitching prospect Alexander Vizcaíno. The three-time All-Star has spent the past 10 seasons with the North-Siders and was the first building block of Chicago’s star-packed core that helped win the World Series in 2016.
The Reds pounded out 14 hits in a 7-4 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The North-Siders visit the Nationals tonight.
The Cardinals host the Twins tonight. The Cards are coming off a two-game road split with the Indians.
Elsewhere in the MLB, The Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a trade to acquire pitcher Max Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner. The Dodgers will send the Washington Nationals four prospects in the blockbuster deal. Both Scherzer and Turner were named All-Stars this season.
The Illini Nation was very happy last night, Ayo Dosunmu is staying in the land of Lincoln. The Illinois guard and Windy City native was drafted by the Bulls with the number-38 overall pick in the second round of last night’s NBA Draft. Dosunmu led Illinois to a 24-and-7 record, a Big Ten Tournament championship and a number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament.
At the Olympics in Tokyo
18-year-old gymnast Sunisa Lee from Minnesota won gold in the women’s Olympic all-around final. Defending Olympic champion Simone Biles watched from the stands after opting out of the competition to focus on her mental health.
Americans Lilly King and Annie Lazor are adding more medals in swimming. King grabbed the silver medal and Lazor earned bronze in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke final. South Africa won the gold medal with a world-record time of two-minutes, 18.95-seconds.
Xander Schauffelee is storming to the lead at the Olympics in the men’s golf competition. The American shot a 63 to take a one-shot lead into the weekend. Fellow Americans Colin Morikawa and Patrick Reed are eight-strokes off the pace at three-under.
