To everyone complaining about Main St. in Seneca being rough, the village council members want everyone to know they’re aware of it. But they’re not able to do anything about it. Member Kent Weber says it’s the Illinois Dept. of Transportation’s responsibility to repair Main St. because it’s also a state highway–Illinois 170.
Village Engineer Casey McCollom says the highway is in IDOT’s five-year plan. But it’s later on in the plan and the engineering work hasn’t started. It could take two to six years to start repaving. A lot of the engineering to be done will actually deal with the sidewalks. McCollom says if IDOT repaves the road, it has to bring the sidewalks into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A big change in elevation on one part of the sidewalk will have to be overcome with a ramp.
