Legislation was reintroduced by Congressman Adam Kinzinger and three other representatives to help clear the passport backlog.
Reports have shown that at least 1.5 million applications are backlogged but it could be as high a 2.2 million.
The Passport Backlog Elimination Act would require the State Department to give a plan to Congress in 30 days after the law is officially signed to shorten the time it takes to get a passport.
Kinzinger says instead of it taking 18 weeks to process, it would drop it down to six to eight weeks for standard applications and only two to three weeks for expedited applications.
The State Department Inspector General would then submit an audit into how effective the plan has been.
