A second psychiatrist has examined 35-year old Peter Bergsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bergsma is the man accused of shooting at two Oglesby police officers who were checking out a recreational vehicle parked at Illinois Valley Community College in December. Neither police officer was hurt.
His defense lawyer has already had him examined, intending to argue that he wasn’t sane when the crime allegedly happened. Prosecutor Greg Sticka game the second exam results to lawyer Brad Popurella Thursday, but neither said in court anything about what it says. If the two reports are at odds over Bergsma’s sanity, there could be a trial after which a jury decides whether he’s mentally fit to help with his defense and have a trial on the charges against him.
