Most LaSalle County Board members don’t think it’s a good idea to allow private family cemeteries anymore. Such cemeteries are all over LaSalle County. Many are no longer cared for by the families that started them in the 1800’s, so a proposal for a new one in Troy Grove Township didn’t get the board’s approval last week. Townships are required to take over their care when the original owners are gone.

County Board member Randy Freeman of Lostant says there’s such a cemetery in his family, so he understands the feelings people have about them.

Mike Kasap of LaSalle would have approved it, although he wanted to know more about the proposal.

The person who applied to start the cemetery is on military duty in South Korea, so he wasn’t at the County Board meeting.
