The company that owns the industrial fire site in Morris bought the old paper mill building in October. The purchase price, according to Grundy County tax records, was $596,912. Superior Battery was incorporated in Illinois in 2012, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
None of the records say why up to 100 tons of lithium batteries are being stored there or when they started being put there. We have tried to contact the people listed in the records to find out. The only answer has been someone telling us the person we asked for isn’t in her office and hanging up when we asked to leave a message.
Although Morris city officials say the building’s use was unknown to them and they’d never heard of Superior Battery until Wednesday, the site’s owners are cooperating.
