Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin says the Republican vote this week to block debate on a voting rights bill shows the battle to let Black Americans vote continues. He says it’s been going on since the Civil War.
The bill not debated on Tuesday would ban gerrymandering—something Illinois Republicans say they’re victims of in the state’s new legislative district map. The bill would also make voter registration more automatic, guarantee at least two weeks of early voting, and make Election Day a national holiday. Durbin’s vowing that the fight will go on.
