During more than an hour of public comment Thursday night, the Illinois Valley Community College Board heard supporters and opponents of a teacher accused of putting her political bias in a test. She’s accused of requiring students to defend liberal views including the legitimacy of the 2020 election, eliminating the electoral college, and the destructiveness of right-wing media.

No one on either side named her. But her supporters say she teaches critical thinking skills.

Board member David Mallery says it’s no secret that academia is generally liberal, but the college must ensure a balance in perspective. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran says he’s willing to consider having more review of the curriculum as suggested in the comments last night.

IVCC President Jerry Corcoran’s reply to the comments:

Marty Rue, Jr. began the public comment session to the IVCC Board of Trustees on an issue of whether a teacher is forcing her political views onto students.
