The Marseilles City Council voted Wednesday to adopt an ordinance that says anyone who owns an electric or gas powered bike they must now register it with the city.

Marseilles Police Chief Brian Faber says that because of the new ordinance electric and gas powered bikes will have to follow both the rules of bikes and the rules of the road like coming to a complete stop at a stop sign.

Faber also says some bike rules apply at night like having lights attached so people can see.

Commissioner of Public Health and safety Gary Lewey says that the people on the bikes will be written up if they don’t follow the rules and won’t be allowed on sidewalks.

Lewey was the first board member to bring up the issue back in April.

Correction from listeners who heard earlier, the Marseilles Police Chiefs name is Brian Faber not Chris.
