The city of Oglesby wants to demolish a building this year, and it’s under a tight timeline to do it. Mayor Dominic Rivara says the Schmidt Building on Walnut St. could be home to an endangered bat species part of the year. So he’s asking for a special meeting to approve a company to take the building down before a six-and-half month wait starts.
Commissioners noted at this week’s City Council meeting, the lot doesn’t have to be cleared. As long as the building is down before the bat can move in for the summer, the endangered species protection requirement is met. The city may also have to remove asbestos from the building.
