The Ottawa Pirates finished the season by dominating the Rochelle Hubs 72-38 at Kingman Gym.

Anthony Cooper had a game-high 19 points with four assists and a team-high five rebounds.  Zach Vogel had a big game posting 16 points and three steals for the win.

The JV team lost to Rochelle 47-41

 

The Ottawa boys bowling team placed second at the I8 conference tournament.

High Rollers for the Pirates was Zander Parise with a single game score of 247. Nelson Brandt added a top score of 244.

 

Kofi Cockburn and Ayo Dosunmu each scored 16 points and made key plays in overtime to send THE Fighting Illini  past  Ohio State 91-88 for its first Big Ten Tournament title since 2005. 

Illinois is the top seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.  The Illini will open the tourney Friday against sixteenth-seeded Drexel at Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis. The Illini earned a one seed for the first time since 2005. Gonzaga, Baylor and Michigan have been assigned the other number-one seeds by the selection committee

Loyola-Chicago is the number-eight seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament.  The Ramblers will face Georgia Tech in the first round on Friday in Indianapolis. The Ramblers reached the Final Four as an 11-seed in 2018.  

College Football this past weekend

The SIU Salukis outscored Northern Iowa 17-16,  ISU lost to North Dakota State 21-13, Western was defeated by North Dakota 38-21 and Eastern lost on the road to Tennessee State 21-20  on Sunday. 

 

Spring Training

The Cubs earned a 1-1 tie against the Angels at Sloan Park.  Anthony Rizzo had the Northsiders lone RBI.  Trevor Williams tossed three and two thirds of scoreless innings for the Cubs.

Matt Reynolds’ home run in the 8th is all the White Sox needed in a 1-0 win over the A’s at Hohokam Park.  Lance Lynn threw three and a third scoreless innings for the pale hose.  The Sox host the Cubs today.  

The Cardinals suffered a 7-5 defeat to the Mets at Clover Park.  José Rondón drove in three for St. Louis and Garrett Williams was tagged with the loss.  The Cards host the Nationals today. 

 

NBA

Patrick Williams scored a team-high 23 points as the Bulls cruised past the Raptors 118-95 at the United Center.  Zach LaVine added 15 points for the Bulls who host the Thunder tomorrow night. 

 

NHL

The Blackhawks visit the Panthers tonight. The Hawks fell 4-2 at Florida on Saturday and are fourth in the Central Division at 14-10-and-5.

 

Over in the PGA, Justin Thomas won The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. 

 

Martin Truex Jr. was the winner on Sunday at the Phoenix Raceway in NASCAR.

 

Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced his retirement from the NFL after 20 seasons. The 42-year-old future Hall of Famer retires as the NFL’s all-time passing yards leader.
