Last night in girls varsity basketball, Seneca defeated Serena in their season opener 53-40.

  • Madison Bromberek led the Lady Irish with 17 points.
  • Taylor Staton scored 16 points for the lady Huskers in the loss.
  • The Seneca Lady Irish will host Midland tonight.

Other games scheduled for tonight for varsity girls 

  • The Marquette Lady Crusaders will open the season hosting Putnam County 
  • The L-P Lady Cavaliers will travel to face Hall

The Ottawa Pirates Bowling team started their season last night and won a coed match against Hall.

  • The Pirates high rollers for the boys were Zander Parise Nelson Brandt and Colin Sheridan 
  • Top bowler for the girls  was Michaela Boaz

 

There were a couple big upsets in college basketball last night 

Third-ranked Villanova lost 70-59 at St. John’s and number-five Houston fell 82-73 to East Carolina.

 

The Chicago Bulls missed 13 straight threes in a 107-103 loss to the New York Knicks at the United Center.  Zach LaVine led Chicago with 24 points. Thaddeus Young added 19-points off the bench.  The Bulls drop to 8-and-12 with their fourth loss in five games.  The Bulls visit the Magic in Orlando Florida tomorrow night.   

The Blackhawks close out a four-game homestand with a second straight contest against the Hurricanes tonight.  Chicago fell to Carolina 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday.  The Hawks slipped to 3-4-and-4 with their fourth loss in five games. 

 

More NHL news

The Minnesota Wild are putting all team activities on hold through at least February 9th, which includes the team’s next four scheduled games. All this is due to five more players added to the COVID-19 protocol.  

 

The White Sox are promoting Chris Getz to assistant general manager & player development.  This will be Getz’s fifth year in charge of the farm system after four seasons as director of player development.  

 

Today the PGA begins The Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona.

 

There was a close call at the beginning of this Super Bowl week for the Kansas City Chiefs when on Sunday  the Chiefs had 20 people, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, other players and staff members, in line for a haircut with a team barber who tested positive for COVID-19..

Backup center Daniel Kilgore was in the chair when the Chiefs pulled the barber once his COVID-19 test results came in.  Kilgore and the barber both were wearing masks and because the backup center  was deemed a close contact, he told the barber to finish. 

 

And because it’s Super Bowl week,  did you know Peyton Manning is the only starting quarterback who has won a Super Bowl title with two different teams (The Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos). Could Tom Brady be the next after this Sunday.
