In Junior High Action, Marquette Academy Volleyball teams  Swept Milton Pope.

The  7th grade team defeated Milton Pope 25-13 25-14. Leading the Lady Knights was Anna Hjerpe with 6 aces 2 assists. The defense was led by Giada Pattelli and Serenity Guzman with 3 digs each. 

 In the 8th grade game Marquette defeated Milton Pope 25-7 25-13. Leading the Lady knights was Maura Condon with 11 aces and a kill. 

 

Unfortunately last night Illinois State lost in the rematch with Drake in Iowa 95-60. The 5-12 Redbirds will host Missouri State in a two game series this weekend.

 

Notre Dame will host Wake Forest tonight in South Bend tonight. The Fighting Irish defeated Pitt 84-58 this weekend.

 

13th ranked Illinois is at Indiana tonight.  The Fighting Illini defeated eighth-ranked Iowa last Friday.  Illinois is 11-and-5 and 7-and-3 in the Big Ten.

 

Last night Lauri Markkanen poured in a game-high 30 points as the Chicago Bulls beat the New York Knicks 110-102 at the United Center.  Zach LaVine finished with 21 points for the Bulls which snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 8-and-11.  The  two teams face off again tomorrow night in Chicago.

 

Over in the WNBA Candace Parker is officially signing with the Chicago Sky.  The two-time MVP has reportedly signed a two-year contract with the Sky.  The suburban Naperville native is returning to her hometown after playing all of her 13 seasons in Los Angeles.  She was selected by the Sparks with the number-one overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft and is a five-time All-Star.

 

The Chicago Blackhawks and Carolina Hurricanes open up a two-game set tonight at the United Center.  The Bulls earned a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.  The Hawks enter tonight at 3-4-and-3.

 The Players Association is rejecting Major League Baseball’s latest proposal to delay the start of the season.  The union says after a review that it won’t be accepting the deal.  MLB reportedly proposed a 154-game slate with expanded playoffs.  Under the proposal, the season would have been delayed one month, but include full pay for players as part of the deal.  The player’s will continue to prepare for an on-time start to the season.

 

The St Louis Cardinals are officially acquiring Nolan Arenado from the Colorado Rockies in a six-player deal. Arenado has won a Gold Glove in each of his eight seasons with the Rockies.  The 29-year-old has been named a National League All-Star five times.

 

.It’s Super Bowl week in the NFL and  did you know for as much money the Super Bowl brings in, one would imagine that the halftime performers get a big paycheck to strut their stuff on game day. That is far from the case, In fact  the NFL pays no appearance fee at all. The only thing the organization pays for is “all of the expenses for the band and it’s often large entourage of stagehands, family, and friends. But for the artists. Super Bowl viewership exposure is worth more than any fees  possible from the NFL.
