St. Rep. David Welter says let’s have a serious conversation about police reform, but let’s also let police have a seat at the table when we discuss it. The Morris Republican issued a statement against a police reform package that he says could have a devastating impact on public safety.
Welter says the proposal would put unfunded mandates on police departments, cut funding for public safety, and allow officers to be punished for unverifiable complaints. And he says it would make it harder to arrest dangerous offenders and keep them in custody. Welter says the proposal requires time and not a rush through a five-day legislative session.
