The fine for driving a big rig truck down a non-truck route in Peru is going up. The City Council has approved raising the cost of just paying a fine without going before the city court judge from $125 to $250.

Police Chief Doug Bernabei says truckers are supposed to know not to drive off of the truck routes, but some trust their GPS units. Some of the truck drivers have to be told not to use GPS units made for car drivers. Big trucks have knocked down poles and signs on streets not made for such big vehicles.

Drivers will be still be able to go to city court to make their case if they want to try to avoid the fine. Bernabei says there have not been any repeat offenders in seven years of enforcing truck routes in Peru.
